Last night was a massive storm. I am not sure why this is, but in my experience in Tuscany, storms can be colossal. They come on quickly and violently. And the thunder is unbelievable. Last evening was one of those. The rain came down in buckets! and my little medieval hobbit house ceiling started leaking...
Today is a very muggy (or is it foggy?) day. A day for a stroll outside the walled city, to visit San Biagio. I'll take you along! First stop is Piazza San Francesco, where you can see San Biagio from a distance:
And then just keep walking. Past olive trees that are sprouting their fruit. These will be ready to pick in October:
Then, continue down a dirt path. You will pass a fenced in olive orchard that has a wonderful wrought-iron gate, complete with barbed wire from the war, no doubt:Inside the fence is a strange menagerie of creatures.....Continue down the cypress-lined path:
Stop at the old cemetery and look around:
I love reading the names and sometimes there are stories on the tombstones. This one, for example, says that she died when she was working in the woods and was struck by lightning. Orlandina Falaschi... died 26 May, 1909. She was 29. Whoa!
She left her husband, child, mother and sister inconsolable:
From there you continue on the tree-lined drive to San Biagio. There was a wedding today so the placed was packed. I'll go back again and take some photos. But back to the apartment for lunch. Some lettuce, farro salad, tomatoes and olives. Buon Appetito!
I swoon at the fabulousness!
